Background of the Study
Economic inequality is a persistent issue in many societies, influencing political stability, social cohesion, and the mobilization of voters. In Lafia Local Government Area (LGA), Nasarawa State, significant income disparities have been linked to uneven access to resources and services, which in turn impacts political mobilization and participation. The effects of economic inequality on political behavior are complex, with disparities often leading to political alienation for some while fostering activism in others (Tijani & Musa, 2023).
This study seeks to explore how economic inequality influences political mobilization in Lafia LGA, focusing on the relationship between socio-economic status and political participation. In particular, it will examine how economic disparities shape voting patterns, political engagement, and the mobilization strategies employed by political parties in Lafia. This will provide a deeper understanding of how inequality intersects with democratic participation in local Nigerian contexts (Gambo & Adamu, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the evident relationship between economic inequality and political mobilization, there is limited research on how this dynamic plays out in specific Nigerian regions like Lafia LGA. While studies have shown that inequality can both depress and stimulate political engagement, the specific effects of economic disparities on political behavior in Lafia LGA are not well understood. This study will investigate how economic inequality influences political mobilization, participation, and electoral outcomes in the region.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the relationship between economic inequality and political mobilization in Lafia LGA.
To evaluate how socio-economic status affects voter participation in Lafia LGA.
To examine the political strategies employed by parties in response to economic inequality in Lafia LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
How does economic inequality influence political mobilization in Lafia LGA?
To what extent does socio-economic status affect political participation in Lafia LGA?
How do political parties respond to economic inequality in their campaign strategies in Lafia LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Economic inequality has a significant impact on political mobilization in Lafia LGA.
Voter participation in Lafia LGA is influenced by socio-economic status.
Political parties adjust their campaign strategies to address economic inequality in Lafia LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to a deeper understanding of the socio-economic factors that influence political behavior and mobilization in Lafia LGA. By examining the role of economic inequality in shaping voter participation, this research will provide insights that can help political parties and policymakers design more inclusive and effective strategies to engage all segments of the population in the democratic process (Aminu & Ismaila, 2023).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on political mobilization in Lafia LGA during the 2023 general elections. Limitations include the difficulty of measuring the full extent of economic inequality and its direct impact on political participation, as well as challenges related to accessing detailed socio-economic data.
